IIT-JEE multichoice questions only

MUMBAI: Putting to rest all confusion over admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the joint admission board (JAB) of IITs clarified that the format of the joint entrance examination. JEE-Advanced paper will be the same as that of IIT-JEE in the last few years.

The ministry for human resource development (MHRD) issued its first ever notification on JEE-2013 for admissions to all centrally-funded technical institutes on August 14.

JEE-Advanced, which will determine admissions to IITs for 2013, will be held on June 2. The JEE-Advanced paper will only have multiple-choice questions which the students will attempt in two sessions, morning and afternoon.

This will come as a relief for aspirants who had been preparing in keeping with the old format which did not include subjective questions. Several IITs, including the one in Mumbai, were in favour of a subjective JEE.

The difficulty level of and the marks allotted to JEE-Advanced tests will be similar to that of previous JEEs.

"We have decided that the format of the test should remain the same as it is too late to introduce changes. However, the notification is just for 2013. The MHRD has also formed an apex board in order to have a smooth JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced this year and in future too," said a senior official from IIT-Bombay. Ashok Misra, the former director of the institute, is the honorary chairperson of the JAB.

The official, who attended the JAB meeting, added, "Machine-readable answersheets will also be retained. The rule allowing candidates to take home a copy of their answersheets will also be followed. While the format and everything else will remain the same in 2013, it can change in future."

According to the notification , top 1.5 lakh candidates, including all categories, from the JEE-Main exam will be eligible to appear for the JEE-Advanced . Students who qualify in the JEE-Advanced exam and fall in the top 20 percentile of the successful candidates in their respective board results will be eligible for admission to IITs.

If states want to admit any students on the basis of JEE scores, a separate state merit list will be given to them. Questions papers can be printed in regional language on demand.

Brilliant Tutorials Changes hands

CHENNAI/MUMBAI: The erstwhile leader of private tutored education in India--Brilliant Tutorials--is in the throes of a legal battle.

The Chennai-headquartered tutorial chain, one of the most reputed and among the oldest, has just seen a chartered accountant R Raghunandan staking claim to 99% shareholding after he converted loans extended to the troubled company into equity. Ten days ago, he issued a "public caution notice" about acquisition of the shares originally held by Vasanti Neelakantan (part of the original promoters of the company) in Brilliant Tutorials (P) Ltd.

"I now own slightly more than 99% in Brilliant which I tried to help over its financial crisis by way of loans. I have infused money for the stake. There is one other shareholder Shyam Nagarajan (who is a director of the company)," Raghunandan told TOI on Wednesday. Raghunandan hails from a business family in Chennai which owned large tracts of land in prime areas of the city.
Repeated attempts to reach Vasanti Neelakantan, who is listed as managing director on the company website, turned futile.

The day-to-day operations across the 32 centres of Brilliant have come to a complete halt, after the management started defaulting on loans late last year.

The 40-year-old Brilliant came into prominence with its unique models for classroom and distance education in coaching for competitive exams in the '80s. Brilliant had an unimpeachable track record on repayment of loans till two years ago. But trouble had already set in when the company diversified into software development more than five years ago. Firstware Software Solution was created to ride the IT wave, but it folded up in a few years, pulling Brilliant down in the process.

Brilliant, which tutored more than 30,000 students annually, had received investment proposals from investors like Sequoia Capital in the past.

More recently, TutorVista, a Pearson company, had approached with a buyout proposal but did not find favour with the founder family. Brilliant-founded by N Thanu and taken forward by his son T Neelakantan-began as coaching centre for IIT-JEE aspirants but expanded to offer correspondence and classroom courses for the whole range of competitive exams including Medical Entrance, AIEEE, GATE and, Civil Services.

"There is an impasse now. All centres have closed down. There are no staff at work. We hope to re-start operations with the help of the existing management," said a source involved with the latest development. Some centres were sold off to franchisee partners to tide over the crisis, but recovery was elusive. Several employees complained of non-payment of salaries and working capital constraints began to bite as revenue dropped. "We apprehend the sale of some of the assets by the erstwhile promoters which is why we cautioned the general public that there is a shareholding change at Brilliant," said one of the sources mentioned earlier.

JEE-2014 Combining with MAHARASHTRA JEE

PUNE: Minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope has said the government is strongly in favour of joining the national joint entrance exam (JEE) for engineering admissions from the academic year 2014-15, instead of 2013-14 as has been proposed by the HRD ministry. "We will convey our position to the HRD ministry soon," he told reporters here on Friday.

"We want to ensure that students from Maharashtra get adequate time to fully prepare for JEE," he said. "Joining the exam from 2013-14 will provide very little time for those students who are currently in Std XII, to prepare for the JEE, which will be based on the new curriculum for Stds XI and XII," he said. "What we have ensured, for now, is that the revised curriculum textbooks are available in the market for students to start their studies," he added.

Tope also said the government is proposing a 50:50 relative weightage to performance in the higher secondary certificate (HSC, Std XII) board exam and in the national JEE, for admissions to the larger section of unaided engineering colleges in the state, following the adoption of JEE by the state.

The state's final decision on when to join the national JEE and on the relative weightage issue will take some time to come through. The two issues will now be referred to the state cabinet for its approval, said Tope. On Thursday, the state government had approved the all-India single entrance exam scheme for medical courses called the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Text (NEET), which is now a certainty from 2013-14. This had generated more curiosity about the government's stance over the JEE for engineering.

The HRD ministry is introducing the national JEE from AY 2013-14 for centrally-funded technical institutions like the IITs, IIITs, NITs, among others, after the IIT council gave its final approval to a revised JEE scheme at its meeting held on June 27.

The scheme envisages a two-stage exam, i.e. JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced. The latter is to be conducted after JEE-Main with a suitable time gap. Only the top 1,50,000 candidates (including all categories) in JEE-Main will qualify to appear in the JEE Advanced examination. Admissions to IITs will be based only on category-wise all-India rank in JEE Advanced, subject to the condition that such candidates are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their boards in applicable categories.

The ministry had left it to the state governments concerned to take a call on the relative weightage to performance in the HSC board exam and the national JEE for admissions to unaided engineering colleges and also to convey their position on joining the JEE scheme. The Maharashtra government had since appointed a committee under the principal secretary to the higher and technical education (H&TE) department, to collect feedback from students, parents, institutions and teachers and give its recommendations on the relative weightage and other connected issues.

"The committee has submitted its report, which is now being tabled before the state cabinet for its approval. The chief minister is also being apprised about the department's view on the issues linked to the national JEE," said Tope.

"We are proposing a 50:50 relative weightage with a view that the importance of attendance of Std XII classes at junior colleges cannot be overlooked. In the last few years, the attendance has fallen to an alarmingly low level due to increased focus on studies at private coaching and individual tuition classes. Students often miss out on the crucial exposure to application-based activities such as laboratory practicals at colleges," he said.

On the implementation of recommendations by the three committees appointed by the states for reforms in higher education, Tope said that the implementation process will begin in a week's time now that the government has received the Kumud Bansal panel report that has laid down a road map for the reforms.

AIEEE 2012 COUNSELLING AND COLLEGE SELECTION

Hi,
You people have been wondering which college you must take as your career initiative, so here is my suggestion
1- Do not follow rubbish priorities on the web , think on your own.
2- Selection of colleges must be made not only on the basis of opening and closing ranks , you must consider other facts too such as location of college (in which city the college is) , it affects a lot.

3- Look for the placements of the college first on some recognized site which does not give you false suggestion .
4- Give priorities to branch rather than college unless their is a huge difference in ranking.

Among best NIT's ,IIIT's for their placements you mut consider this list .
DTU (Delhi technical University).
NIT Allahabad
NIT warangal
NIT Surathkal
NIT Trichy
IIIT Allahabad
IIIT Gwalior

I must say that if you have got ranks < 3000 then you must fill IIIT hyderabad as your first priority because it is the best institute if you are interested in IT sector .
AT Last
If your rank is not so good , i mean if it is > 25000 and less than 30000 then you must wait for the last or se7enth counselling because believe me you can miss the gr8 opportunity of getting NIT but branch will not be of your interest because i know nobody wants to choose mining as his sole career.

IIT-JEE DIED successfully

NEW DELHI: From 2013, aspiring candidates for IITs and other central institutes like NITs and IIITs will have to sit under new a format of entrance test which will also take plus two board results into consideration.

The announcement was made today by HRD minister Kapil Sibal after chairing a meeting of the joint councils of IITs, NITs and IIITs.

Emphasising that there was no "dissent" among the councils about the move, he acknowledged there "was a lot of resistance during the consultation process from the IIT system". IIT senates especially the faculty federation had been opposing the new format.

But Sibal said the selection of the candidates for the IITs and other central institutes would be different even as all the aspirants will have to go through all the steps under new format. This system will replace the IIT-JEE and AIEEE.

Students will sit for a main test and an advance test conducted on the same day.

For admission to all the centrally funded institutes, there would be 40 percentage weightage for performance in class XII (after normalisation of marks), 30 per cent weightage to performance in main and 30 per cent in the advanced test.

In case of IITs, there would be a filtering process involved. The board results and the main test will be given 50 per cent weightage each. Only the top 50,000 students will be selected for the advance test after taking into account their performance in the board results and the main result.

"The merit only in advanced examination will be considered for admission" to the IITs, Sibal said.

At the same time, he added, the IIT council has agreed to move to the other system by 2015.

Explaining the selection of candidates under the new format for the IITs, one of the IIT directors said results of advance test of only those students who have crossed the "barrier" of the 50 per cent weightage to board marks and mains will be counted while preparing the merit list.

Even as the process of selection to the IITs would be different then other institutes, he said the counselling to IITs and other institutes will be done jointly and allotment of seats will be done together.

"I as a student will get a rank in IIT and also get a rank for NIT and IIIT. I will give my choice in both and depending on which is my first choice in either, I will get a seat," he explained.

While the main test shall be multiple type paper, he nature and modalities of the advanced shall be determined by the joint admission board (JAB) of the IITs.

Sibal made it clear that JAB of the IIT system would have complete control on matters such as paper setting, evaluation and preparation of merit list over the advanced test while CBSE will provide administrative support for conduct of the examination.

For conduct of the main examination, an expanded joint admission board will be constituted including the NIT, other centrally funded institutes and state government representatives.

Noting that state boards would have the flexibility to adopt the new format the determine their own relative weightages, the minister said Maharashtra, Gujarat and Haryana have evinced interest adopting the new format.

IIT-JEE future will be decided on 28th May

The logjam over merging IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) with the single entrance for all engineering courses continues as the IIT Council meeting held to discuss the modalities ended without anyconclusive outcome on Saturday.

During the meeting, between IIT directors and the Human Resource Development ministry, it is learnt that the senates of six IITs (Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagapur, Chennai, Kanpur, Roorkee) clearly expressed their disagreement with the ministry’s proposal of including IIT in the single Common Entrance Test (CET). The senate of IIT Guwahati was the only one which agreed with the proposal.

There was a general feeling among the Senates that the proposed CET can be used as a filter to screen students and thereafter the IITs can conduct one more test to select from the pool of the merit list. In fact, IIT Kharagpur Senate even suggested that instead of going in haste, the premier engineering institutes should first examine how the CET goes on for the first two years as a selection procedure before adopting it.

The MHRD and Councils of IIT and NIT will now hold a joint meeting on May 28 to take a final call on this.

The CET, which is expected to begin from 2013-14, will also club the IIT-JEE along with entrance test for all engineering colleges under central government.

The All-India IIT Faculty Federation along with IIT Delhi, Kanpur and Mumbai, have openly expressed their reservation against the CET fearing that it may dilute the brand of country’s premier engineering institutes, and suggested various changes in the format proposed by the government.

BitSat vs IIT -JEE student -to-seat ratio

Cracking the IIT-JEE may be top priority for most students, but the BITSAT is now the most competitive of all national engineering entrance exams in the country. An average of 68 students will compete for a seat in this year's BITSAT, the online test for admission into degree courses at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, which starts on May 10. In comparison, only 54 students contested for a seat at the IIT-JEE 2012.

Based on number of applications received, 1.36 lakh students are expected to take the BITSAT-2012 for admission to a total of 2,000 seats at the institute's campuses in Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa. The exam will be conducted in 32 centres across the country between May 10 and June 9, 2012. On the other hand, 5.2 lakh students took the IIT-JEE 2012 on April 8 to be eligible for 9,600 seats in the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), the Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

The VITEEE, which was conducted on April 21 for admission into deemed university Vellore Institute of Technology, follows the IITs with 48 students competing for one seat. The exam was taken by about 1.5 lakh students across India for admission to 3,100 seats. "VIT sees the largest number of applicants among deemed universities because of its placement record, especially in the IT sector," said Jayaprakash Gandhi, an education consultant.

Next comes the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE), which was taken by 11 lakh students this year for admission into approximately 35,000 seats in the 31 National Institutes of Technology (NIT). The AIEEE score is also used by approximately 50 other private and government engineering institutions across the country, many of which have a majority of seats reserved for students of the home state and admit them by conducting their own regional common entrance tests. On an average, 31 students compete for one seat with the AIEEE score.

AIEEE is followed by some more private and deemed universities such as Manipal and SRM which have grown in popularity over the last few years, especially because of their superior infrastructure. Manipal recorded 27 applicants per seat this year followed by SRM with a ratio of 22 per seat.

Fewer seats gives BITS edge

Educationists say it is the increase in intake at IITs that has lowered its student-to-seat ratio, putting it behind BITS. In 2008, six new IITs were established and several courses added, which took total number of seats from approximately 5,500 to 7,000. Two more IITs were added in 2009 and the number of seats went up to 8,200. Introduction of newer courses and an increase in the number of seats has taken the number of seats to 9,600 in 2011-2012.

In comparison, numbers of seats at BITS have remained constant at 2000, making it more competitive. "The BITSAT has been growing in popularity among students since it was introduced in 2005. Over the last 2-3 years, number of applicants has increased enough to make the exam more competitive than the IIT-JEE," says S Mohan, associate dean of admissions at BITS. The institute, founded in 1964, used to admit students based on their class 12 marks before 2005. Since 2007, students are not allowed to take the IIT-JEE more than twice, slowing down the growth rate in the number of applicants. While 3.2 lakh students took the exam in 2008, 3.95 lakh took it in 2009, 4.72 lakh took it in 2010 and 4.8 lakh took it in 2011. This year, BITSAT lowered its eligibility criteria from 80% to 75% in the board exams making more students eligible. "We found that a lot of students were getting left out due to the high qualifying percentage," says Mohan.

Over the last five years, number of students applying to the BITSAT has increased steadily from around 88,000 in 2007 to 1.23 lakh in 2011 and 1.36 lakh in 2012.The BITSAT is also completely based on the NCERT school syllabus which makes it more popular, especially among CBSE school students. 'We discourage aspiring students from taking extra coaching for the exams and students who prepare well for their class 12 boards can do well in the BITSAT," says Mohan. Students also need to obtain a minimum average of 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Math in the board exam to qualify for a seat, the highest cut-off among all other engineering tests.

IIT-JEE showing the answer sheet

For the first time, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) will be displaying the Optical Response Sheets (ORS) of all candidates who wrote the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-2012 held on April 8. The ORS will be on display from May 5 to May 10 along with machine read responses and the marks scored. During these six days the candidates will be able to go through the evaluation done.

IIT-JEE coaching leverage

BHUBANESWAR: With medical and engineering entrance examinations round the corner, coaching centres in the city are luring students with several new schemes.

With course studies for the exams over, most coaching centres are now offering practice test series (PTS), both online and offline. While the PTS in two prominent coaching centres in Satyanagar began earlier this week, it is set to begin next week for most others. Besides offering the mock tests to their enrolled students who received coaching round the year, the tutorials are also offering the test to other students.

"The test is open for all. We are charging a nominal fee of Rs 8,000 for 15 tests," said coordinator of a coaching centre.

A new company in Bhubaneswar on Sunday announced the launch of an online test series for All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and IIT Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) for a cost of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000.

"Since the real time tests have become online, the online mock tests will help acclimatize the aspirants for the big day," a representative of the company said. AIEEE is compulsorily online for 22 cities, including Bhubaneswar. Students who have never appeared for any online test and do not have any exposure of working on a web-based platform face considerable challenges while taking a time-bound test.

"Our tests will be of great help to such students," he said.

The centres claim their test series mimic the real one. "Till the preliminary All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) on April 1, our tests will be on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) pattern. After April 1, we will start an exclusive series for Odisha Joint Entrance Examination," said a chemistry teacher at a coaching centre.

An estimated 80,000 students have been receiving coaching from three prominent centres in Satynagar area of the city. It is estimated another 30,000 students would join the test series at the centres.

Educationists, however, cautioned students not to fall in the trap of alluring advertising by these centres. "Deviation from fundamental study to question and answer based approach is not going to help students much," said S N Mohanty, principal of BJB Junior College.

Mohanty said the most important aspect of study should be fundamental understanding of the subjects. Other efforts at best could be complimentary, he said.

Dr R N Panda, principal of Institute of Higher Secondary Education, a Plus II college in the city, also expressed similar views. Though taking frequent tests can help students learn better time management, it is clarity about the fundamentals of the courses that is of paramount importance, he said.

"Without fundamental study, students won't be able to answer if the question is tweaked a little and would not help them crack highly competitive entrance tests such as those of IIT JEE and AIEEE," he said.

Panda said students who are to appear for Plus II examination this year should not fall prey to taking the test series by coaching centres. Instead they should concentrate on the Plus II examination, which they need to qualify with good scores to be eligible for various entrance examinations.

Over 5 Lakh students appearing iit-jee 2012

MUMBAI: A little over 5 lakh candidates will sit for the upcoming edition of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), the test to join the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology.

The number of aspirants is up by 16,000 from the previous year when 4.86 lakh Class XII students took the exam. In 2010, the count of test takers was 4.56 lakh. Officers in all JEE offices, spread across the seven old IITs, said applications were still being scrutinized and the final tally of test takers is projected to be anywhere between 4.75 lakh and 5.02 lakh.

Yet, JEE 2012 has seen the smallest increase in applications in any two corresponding years. "We feel the number of aspirants applying to sit for the JEE is stabilizing. There was a sudden spurt in the applications when the eight new IITs started," said R V Shevgaonkar, IIT-Delhi director.

JEE 2012 will be held on April 8 and this will probably also be the last of the JEE as we know it.

The Bombay zone comprising Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Goa, Gujarat and north of Karnataka has topped the chart in the recent past with the largest pool of applications. But this year, Kanpur took pole position, followed by the Madras zone.

"Unlike the old days when most students applied from the metro-centric areas and from the upper middle class, we are now seeing a trend where, thanks to the proliferation of secondary schooling, there is a big upsurge in demand for quality education from students of middle or tier two cities," said Sanjay Dhande, IIT-Kanpur director. Clearly, he added, the rise in applications from the middle-India belt points to the demographic changes where a large young population resides.

Andhra Pradesh, that falls in the Madras zone, is home to a large number of coaching academies and has contributed to the increase in the number of JEE applications, said experts.

Officials at JEE offices said there has been a slight rise in the number of female candidates this year; since last year, there is no application fee for girls. "Otherwise, there isn't any big change in the number of reserved category students. Also, there will be no change in this year's paper pattern," added a JEE chairman.

For next year, the JEE will go by in the recommendations of a committee, headed by secretary of science and technology department T Ramaswamy, which emphasises the fact that Class XII scores must be factored in the overall JEE scores.

But whichever way the Ramaswamy report goes, IIT faculty believe that there is another crucial factor that is likely to alter the JEE: the composition of the candidates who sit for it. "With the implementation of the core science curriculum for all schools across the country, we are likely to see a large share of state board students from every corner of India to take the JEE.

Currently, the test is dominated by CBSE students," said an IIT director.

SAVE IIT JEE

As we all know that iit-jee exam is going in water very soon from 2013.We are here trying our best to save the exam by protesting against this heck because we know that engineers quality will get degraded after the new admission scheme has been launched so we should try to prevent this from happening JOIN HANDS here .

How can a politician decide the education system even if he is the education minister then too this right shoud not be given to him to change the rule just to give leverage to those who don't want to study rather ?

???????

How can anyone just getting passed with 90% by cramping things should be declared intelligent ??

???????

What about the labour and sacrifice we were doing till we were in the age of playing cricket, but we were preparing for the iit-jee ?

???????

Answer all these questions to Education minister here in this blog.

SUPER 30 TO SUPER 50 BY ANAND KUMAR(BIHAR)

Mathematician Anand Kumar, who is well known for his Super 30 programme, will now step out of Patna and conduct written exams in other Hindi speaking states. Super 30 selects meritorious but poor students and prepares them for IIT-JEE exams, and this year the number of students to be selected has been increased to 50.

Speaking at the India Today Aspire Education Summit 2012 in Delhi last week, Anand said, "Due to the success of Super 30 programme, there was demand from various quarters to increase the intake of students and so it was decided that we would select more students through written exam to be conducted in April 2012 across 10 centres in the Hindi belt."

Every year Super 30 selects 30 extremely talented students who come from financially poor families but aspire to get into the IITs. Anand and his colleagues coach these students free of cost and guide them. Between 2003 and 2011, Anand and his team coached 270 students of whom 234 made it to various IITs across the country.

Anand said the exam centres would be in Delhi, Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzzaffarpur (Bihar), Kanpur, Lucknow, Banaras, Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradessh) and Rewari (Haryana). Apart from these centres, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and four to five other exam centers are also being considered.

To take the entrance exam, students have to pay Rs.50 for the entrance exam and download the form from the Super 30 website. The students who are selected will be prepared for the 2013 IIT-JEE exam. "These students would be coached for a year at Patna in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Accommodation would also be provide free of cost to the students," Anand said.
Informing about the way the students are prepared, Anand says that every day the students take one and half hour classes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Classes are held six days a week with 5-6 tests being conducted every month. Anand's brother Pranav and mother Jayanti Devi look after the boarding and food for the students.

Anand and his colleagues coach other students in the evening to fund the Super 30 programme.

The world has acknowledged the success of Super 30. Anand's education model has been praised world over with Time ranking it among the top educational institutions of Asia.

Anand gives credit for the success to his students, "It is the students who put in the effort; most of the students study for 14 hours every day, therefore they should be credited for their success," he says.

Anand, who is now preparing his students for International Olympiads, says he wants to open schools that provide free education if state governments are willing to give land at concessional rates.

JEE BREAKING THE STRESS NOW

he decision of the Union human resources development ministry to push for replacing the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) with a common aptitude-cum-advanced knowledge test by 2013 is an innovative move. The two exams are currently the most important for engineering aspirants in the country.

While the JEE determines admission to the 15 premier IITs, the AIEEE secures admission to 30 National Institutes of Technology, four Indian Institutes of Information Technology and five Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research. However, there is a plethora of other exams that one must take to seek admission to those colleges not covered by the JEE or the AIEEE. As a result, an engineering aspirant invariably ends up taking three to five entrance tests during admission season.

It is precisely to mitigate this burden that the new common test has been designed. Divided into two parts - aptitude and an optional advanced section - the test along with class XII board results will determine admissions to all centrally funded engineering institutions. However, if the aim is to institute a system similar to the American SAT examination, individual colleges must have the freedom to determine how much weight each component should be given.

Contrary to this principle, the proposed admission formula mandates 60% weight for common test scores with board marks constituting the rest 40%. This is bound to create discrepancies as state boards across the country have hugely varying standards. If the proposed formula were to be adopted, each state board would try to outdo the others with liberal marking, setting off a race to the bottom.

Having said that, the overall push for a common entrance exam is welcome. The aptitude part of the common test could be used in disciplines other than engineering as well, while the advanced section could be tailored for different disciplines. The existing system of multiple entrance exams has encouraged cram pressure in higher education and created enormous stress for students.

Worse still, it has created a wide gap between school curricula and competitive exam syllabi that has aided the mushrooming of coaching centres throughout the country. This in turn has been one of the factors stymieing innovation in our institutes of higher learning, as evident in the poor quality of research output.

That more than 2,500 students commit suicide every year due to exam-related stress is worrying. By focussing on aptitude and creativity, the common entrance test can alleviate student pressure while allowing colleges enough flexibility to determine their own admission criteria..

Windows 8 developer preview reviewed

Hi
I am definitely not going to put craps here by giving the specifications and technology used in windows 8 because you can get it anywhere on msdn articles (thousands are out there) just google it.
I m just reviewing it as general experience i had with my PC today.

It was though my worst day this year but then too enjoyed a lot in playing 'johny'(it's a integrated game in windows 8 developer preview) ,huh,,it doesn't mean that i have played just johny whole day rather i have tried new features .Man!! it has a fantastic interface, absolutely delicious, yummy. The start menu is so flexible there ,i mean you don't have to do anything like there in windows 7 like going to start menu and selecting the program or accessories or bla bla to switch over to the issue(i often use this word for programs) ,you just have to press the start menu write down there and new beautiful screen will appear containing your apps the applications you visited recently and storing the same sessions where you left it off.
Above was just the introduction of what i felt today .
Installation - With me it became trajedy and fun side by side because in an excitement i forgot to install it on virtual machine and uploaded or installed it on my main machine without caring about my document and still i am paying for that by trying to install the softwares and apps on my preview(the whole day was wonderfully hectic). It just asks for your WINDOWS LIVE ID during installation and if you don't have it then it makes one.
you need to log on to use this PC and this PC gets registered through your LIVE ID .

Usage - Restart the PC because if you don't then it crashes sometimes like hell. After restarting your PC you will get to see the screen as a background which you can change  later ,click on the bottim of that screen and you will get to see your main LOG ON page enter your password there(WINDOWS LIVE ID PASSWORD) and enter in a new world .Clicking on the start menu will lead you to tab view
where you can see your recent sessions and apps installed in your PC  such as VISUAL STUDIO 11 and .net framework 4.5.

IIM's Placement

AHMEDABAD: The Indian Institutes of Management are getting innovative with their placement process to beat recession. IIM-Indore has partnered with some placement consultancy firms to help 100-130 participants who might look for jobs at the end of placements.

Anmol Bhalla, coordinator (placement committee) IIM-Indore , said: "The idea is to get jobs in line with students' expectations, both in terms of profiles and salaries." As the number of regular recruiters is likely to drop this year, IIM-Kozhikode is allowing students to accept only one offer as compared to previous years when each student was spoilt for choice.

"Recruiters have definitely become more cautious," said G Sridhar , chairperson, placements, IIMKozhikode . "Many regular recruiters who previously hired in large numbers have decreased their hiring and many others have declined to participate in placements this year."

Similarly, IIM-Bangalore has tweaked its placement process this year. Placements 2012 at IIM-B will be held only on weekends, replacing the earlier process where placements were carried out for five days without a break. "Many more new sectors and areas have been added - like e-commerce , human resources, among others," aid Rajesh Aithal, chairperson, placements at IIMLucknow .

Atreyi Bose, member, student placement committee, IIM Ahmedabad , said: "We are reaching out to new companies and sectors which students have shown interest in joining." Companies are still sourcing for talent from campuses and are keen to be a part of the process , Bose added.

"While companies are more skeptical than they were in 2009, it is a good sign that they have not stopped hiring," Sridhar said. "It will take slightly longer than usual to place the entire batch this year."

Attending schools and Getting into IIT

It has been a myth that bunking from the schools for getting prepared for the iit-jee will assure your selection but from this new plan published in my last post that 'IIT WILL INCLUDE 40% BOARD MARKS IN IT'S SELECTION CRITERIA' ,It will be necessary for the students to attend their schools properly.

NEW DELHI: Performing well in school will become more important for IIT aspirants from 2013. It's almost decided now that at least 40% weightage will be given to class XII marks for admission to the 15 IITs as well as other engineering institutes in the country.

No wonder schools are elated. Calling it a step in the right direction, principals say the new policy will make sure that science students preparing for engineering entrance exams in class XII attend classes and focus equally on their Board exams. The move is also aimed at curbing the business of coaching centres which simply 'equip' candidates to crack competitive exams caring little for concept-based teaching.

"It's a right step as now students will focus more on school. Many children in classes XI and XII skip classes to go for coaching. Or they often have long classes after which they do not attend school to do self-study. The coaching institutes only equip students to crack an exam. Parents' money also gets wasted in the process as not all can get through," said L V Sehgal, principal, Bal Bharati School, Ganga Ram Hospital Marg.

D R Saini, principal, DPS R K Puram, added, "Education should be wholesome. But these days some schools have come up which tie up with coaching institutes. These schools just charge fees for enrolment without the need to attend classes. They, instead, let students spend their time preparing for competitive exams at coaching centres. The new admission policy for IITs will put a stop to that practice. Besides school performance, the candidates will be evaluated through a common aptitude test in place of JEE and AIEEE. According to D V Khakhar, director, IIT-Bombay, a single test will also help get rid of the multiplicity of entrance exams. "Students, who have done well in school, are welcome in IITs. It's time coaching centres were regulated."

The Joint Admission Board of IITs will take a final decision on the policy at its February 18 meeting, however, coaching centres say they will not be out of business. "We train students for competitive exams. We will absorb the changes introduced in the entrance test and adapt ourselves to new training methodology. Besides, we make sure our students focus on school," said Ajay Antony, course director, TIME. K Gopal, director, Narayana Institute, added, "With school performance being considered, students will have to perform much better in class XII Boards too. They can't score in the nineties without special assistance. That's where we come in. Not just for competitive exams, students need coaching institutes for doing well in the Boards too."

Aspirants have their own concerns. Shekhar Chaudhry, a class XI student from Janakpuri, who travels to Ber Sarai for IIT coaching every day, said, "Many like me have already enrolled in a two-year programme to prepare for IIT-JEE. Such a change should have been introduced from 2014."

IIT JEE set to go, 40% weightage for Class 12

A common aptitude-cum-advanced knowledge test will replace the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) in 2013. Test scores will have 60 per cent weight in deciding admissions; school board marks will have 40 per cent. Test and board scores will determine admissions to all centrally funded engineering institutions.

The common entrance exam, planned as a SAT-type test, is likely to be held online from 2014, and could be given twice a year, highly placed sources said. The paper test is likely to stay on until the online system stabilizes.

The NIT council has approved the new format. All the IITs have agreed too, and are likely to give their formal approval at a meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) on February 18. The human resource development (HRD) ministry has formed a committee of IIT directors and CBSE officials to work out the modalities before the meeting.

The ministry has been working on a common entrance format for over a year, with the aim of reducing the stress of taking multiple tests for students just out of Class 12, checking the coaching business which promotes learning by rote, and reinforcing the importance of school education.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal plans to take the proposal to the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) to help build acceptability and consensus for the common entrance test among state governments.

“The common entrance exam will have two elements — simple aptitude testing to assess scholastic levels, and an advanced section which a student can choose to either continue with or skip,” said a source.

“This test will essentially produce only scorecards for each student, and the concerned institute will then decide how it will use the 60 per cent weight — say, an IIT can rely more on scores achieved on the advanced level section than on aptitude. It could be a 30-30 aptitude-advanced knowledge format for IITs, and 40-20 for NITs,” the source said.

“While AIEEE and JEE will go, the JAB and the Central Counselling Board (CCB) will stay to work on these finer points and modalities of admission.”

The JEE currently decides admissions to the 15 IITs; the AIEEE to the 30 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 4 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and 5 Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs). A host of private engineering and technical institutes in the states also use AIEEE scores. Over 10 lakh students apply for AIEEE and 5 lakh for JEE every year.
