For the first time, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) will be displaying the Optical Response Sheets (ORS) of all candidates who wrote the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-2012 held on April 8. The ORS will be on display from May 5 to May 10 along with machine read responses and the marks scored. During these six days the candidates will be able to go through the evaluation done.

IIT-JEE coaching leverage
BHUBANESWAR: With medical and engineering entrance examinations round the corner, coaching centres in the city are luring students with several new schemes.
With course studies for the exams over, most coaching centres are now offering practice test series (PTS), both online and offline. While the PTS in two prominent coaching centres in Satyanagar began earlier this week, it is set to begin next week for most others. Besides offering the mock tests to their enrolled students who received coaching round the year, the tutorials are also offering the test to other students.
"The test is open for all. We are charging a nominal fee of Rs 8,000 for 15 tests," said coordinator of a coaching centre.
A new company in Bhubaneswar on Sunday announced the launch of an online test series for All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and IIT Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) for a cost of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000.
"Since the real time tests have become online, the online mock tests will help acclimatize the aspirants for the big day," a representative of the company said. AIEEE is compulsorily online for 22 cities, including Bhubaneswar. Students who have never appeared for any online test and do not have any exposure of working on a web-based platform face considerable challenges while taking a time-bound test.
"Our tests will be of great help to such students," he said.
The centres claim their test series mimic the real one. "Till the preliminary All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) on April 1, our tests will be on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) pattern. After April 1, we will start an exclusive series for Odisha Joint Entrance Examination," said a chemistry teacher at a coaching centre.
An estimated 80,000 students have been receiving coaching from three prominent centres in Satynagar area of the city. It is estimated another 30,000 students would join the test series at the centres.
Educationists, however, cautioned students not to fall in the trap of alluring advertising by these centres. "Deviation from fundamental study to question and answer based approach is not going to help students much," said S N Mohanty, principal of BJB Junior College.
Mohanty said the most important aspect of study should be fundamental understanding of the subjects. Other efforts at best could be complimentary, he said.
Dr R N Panda, principal of Institute of Higher Secondary Education, a Plus II college in the city, also expressed similar views. Though taking frequent tests can help students learn better time management, it is clarity about the fundamentals of the courses that is of paramount importance, he said.
"Without fundamental study, students won't be able to answer if the question is tweaked a little and would not help them crack highly competitive entrance tests such as those of IIT JEE and AIEEE," he said.
Panda said students who are to appear for Plus II examination this year should not fall prey to taking the test series by coaching centres. Instead they should concentrate on the Plus II examination, which they need to qualify with good scores to be eligible for various entrance examinations.

Over 5 Lakh students appearing iit-jee 2012
MUMBAI: A little over 5 lakh candidates will sit for the upcoming edition of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), the test to join the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology.
The number of aspirants is up by 16,000 from the previous year when 4.86 lakh Class XII students took the exam. In 2010, the count of test takers was 4.56 lakh. Officers in all JEE offices, spread across the seven old IITs, said applications were still being scrutinized and the final tally of test takers is projected to be anywhere between 4.75 lakh and 5.02 lakh.
Yet, JEE 2012 has seen the smallest increase in applications in any two corresponding years. "We feel the number of aspirants applying to sit for the JEE is stabilizing. There was a sudden spurt in the applications when the eight new IITs started," said R V Shevgaonkar, IIT-Delhi director.
JEE 2012 will be held on April 8 and this will probably also be the last of the JEE as we know it.
The Bombay zone comprising Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Goa, Gujarat and north of Karnataka has topped the chart in the recent past with the largest pool of applications. But this year, Kanpur took pole position, followed by the Madras zone.
"Unlike the old days when most students applied from the metro-centric areas and from the upper middle class, we are now seeing a trend where, thanks to the proliferation of secondary schooling, there is a big upsurge in demand for quality education from students of middle or tier two cities," said Sanjay Dhande, IIT-Kanpur director. Clearly, he added, the rise in applications from the middle-India belt points to the demographic changes where a large young population resides.
Andhra Pradesh, that falls in the Madras zone, is home to a large number of coaching academies and has contributed to the increase in the number of JEE applications, said experts.
Officials at JEE offices said there has been a slight rise in the number of female candidates this year; since last year, there is no application fee for girls. "Otherwise, there isn't any big change in the number of reserved category students. Also, there will be no change in this year's paper pattern," added a JEE chairman.
For next year, the JEE will go by in the recommendations of a committee, headed by secretary of science and technology department T Ramaswamy, which emphasises the fact that Class XII scores must be factored in the overall JEE scores.
But whichever way the Ramaswamy report goes, IIT faculty believe that there is another crucial factor that is likely to alter the JEE: the composition of the candidates who sit for it. "With the implementation of the core science curriculum for all schools across the country, we are likely to see a large share of state board students from every corner of India to take the JEE.
Currently, the test is dominated by CBSE students," said an IIT director.

SAVE IIT JEE
As we all know that iit-jee exam is going in water very soon from 2013.We are here trying our best to save the exam by protesting against this heck because we know that engineers quality will get degraded after the new admission scheme has been launched so we should try to prevent this from happening JOIN HANDS here .
How can a politician decide the education system even if he is the education minister then too this right shoud not be given to him to change the rule just to give leverage to those who don't want to study rather ?

How can anyone just getting passed with 90% by cramping things should be declared intelligent ??

What about the labour and sacrifice we were doing till we were in the age of playing cricket,but we were preparing for the iit-jee ?

SUPER 30 TO SUPER 50 BY ANAND KUMAR(BIHAR)
Mathematician Anand Kumar, who is well known for his Super 30 programme, will now step out of Patna and conduct written exams in other Hindi speaking states. Super 30 selects meritorious but poor students and prepares them for IIT-JEE exams, and this year the number of students to be selected has been increased to 50.
Speaking at the India Today Aspire Education Summit 2012 in Delhi last week, Anand said, "Due to the success of Super 30 programme, there was demand from various quarters to increase the intake of students and so it was decided that we would select more students through written exam to be conducted in April 2012 across 10 centres in the Hindi belt."
Every year Super 30 selects 30 extremely talented students who come from financially poor families but aspire to get into the IITs. Anand and his colleagues coach these students free of cost and guide them. Between 2003 and 2011, Anand and his team coached 270 students of whom 234 made it to various IITs across the country.
Anand said the exam centres would be in Delhi, Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzzaffarpur (Bihar), Kanpur, Lucknow, Banaras, Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradessh) and Rewari (Haryana). Apart from these centres, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and four to five other exam centers are also being considered.
To take the entrance exam, students have to pay Rs.50 for the entrance exam and download the form from the Super 30 website. The students who are selected will be prepared for the 2013 IIT-JEE exam. "These students would be coached for a year at Patna in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Accommodation would also be provide free of cost to the students," Anand said.
Informing about the way the students are prepared, Anand says that every day the students take one and half hour classes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Classes are held six days a week with 5-6 tests being conducted every month. Anand's brother Pranav and mother Jayanti Devi look after the boarding and food for the students.
Anand and his colleagues coach other students in the evening to fund the Super 30 programme.
The world has acknowledged the success of Super 30. Anand's education model has been praised world over with Time ranking it among the top educational institutions of Asia.
Anand gives credit for the success to his students, "It is the students who put in the effort; most of the students study for 14 hours every day, therefore they should be credited for their success," he says.
Anand, who is now preparing his students for International Olympiads, says he wants to open schools that provide free education if state governments are willing to give land at concessional rates.

JEE BREAKING THE STRESS NOW
he decision of the Union human resources development ministry to push for replacing the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) with a common aptitude-cum-advanced knowledge test by 2013 is an innovative move. The two exams are currently the most important for engineering aspirants in the country.
While the JEE determines admission to the 15 premier IITs, the AIEEE secures admission to 30 National Institutes of Technology, four Indian Institutes of Information Technology and five Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research. However, there is a plethora of other exams that one must take to seek admission to those colleges not covered by the JEE or the AIEEE. As a result, an engineering aspirant invariably ends up taking three to five entrance tests during admission season.
It is precisely to mitigate this burden that the new common test has been designed. Divided into two parts - aptitude and an optional advanced section - the test along with class XII board results will determine admissions to all centrally funded engineering institutions. However, if the aim is to institute a system similar to the American SAT examination, individual colleges must have the freedom to determine how much weight each component should be given.
Contrary to this principle, the proposed admission formula mandates 60% weight for common test scores with board marks constituting the rest 40%. This is bound to create discrepancies as state boards across the country have hugely varying standards. If the proposed formula were to be adopted, each state board would try to outdo the others with liberal marking, setting off a race to the bottom.
Having said that, the overall push for a common entrance exam is welcome. The aptitude part of the common test could be used in disciplines other than engineering as well, while the advanced section could be tailored for different disciplines. The existing system of multiple entrance exams has encouraged cram pressure in higher education and created enormous stress for students.
Worse still, it has created a wide gap between school curricula and competitive exam syllabi that has aided the mushrooming of coaching centres throughout the country. This in turn has been one of the factors stymieing innovation in our institutes of higher learning, as evident in the poor quality of research output.
That more than 2,500 students commit suicide every year due to exam-related stress is worrying. By focussing on aptitude and creativity, the common entrance test can alleviate student pressure while allowing colleges enough flexibility to determine their own admission criteria..

This is bound to create discrepancies as state boards across the country have hugely varying standards. If the proposed formula were to be adopted, each state board would try to outdo the others with liberal marking, setting off a race to the bottom.
Having said that, the overall push for a common entrance exam is welcome. The aptitude part of the common test could be used in disciplines other than engineering as well, while the advanced section could be tailored for different disciplines. The existing system of multiple entrance exams has encouraged cram pressure in higher education and created enormous stress for students.
Worse still, it has created a wide gap between school curricula and competitive exam syllabi that has aided the mushrooming of coaching centres throughout the country. This in turn has been one of the factors stymieing innovation in our institutes of higher learning, as evident in the poor quality of research output.
That more than 2,500 students commit suicide every year due to exam-related stress is worrying. By focussing on aptitude and creativity, the common entrance test can alleviate student pressure while allowing colleges enough flexibility to determine their own admission criteria..
